SDV: A Blogger Escapes the Real World, Part Eight

Posted on 09/26/202009/22/2020 by margrad80

Spoiler alert!
I am not even going to try to avoid spoilers. So be forewarned.

This walkthrough is for the iPad version of the game which has quite a few differences from the desktop version.

Stardew Valley is very flexible, so as you play the game your experiences will not be the same as mine. Once I am past the game basics, I will not be going step by step, but only recapping the action.

If you are looking just to get a particular question about the game answered. You can find just about every thing you need to know in the Wiki.

Rainy days are good days to go down into the mine to do a little mining and combat. In this game, my garden is very small, but in previous game-lives not having to water the garden was a big time saver. Before I learned about the fortune teller, I always went to the mines on rainy days. Now I try to make it down on all very lucky days, raining or not.

I had to take some time to harvest some crops and plant one ones.
The cauliflower seeds are coming in handy.

One of the things you have to keep in mind when planting crops is that each one has a growing time. all crops die at the end of the season, so you have to make sure you have enough days left for them to grow, or you get no return on the seeds.

As soon I had finished with the planting I headed over to the mine. Another thing I make sure of before going down in the mine is that I have enough to eat. At this point, I had six field snacks, which I thought would keep me covered for the day.

I decided not to take the cherry bomb down with me this time freeing up another slot in the backpack
In the elevator I decided to pick up where I left off on floor #10.

On the 10th floor, there is nothing to do. The treasure chest, which was there before is now gone. There is a ladder going down to the 11th floor. The nice thing about playing the game on the iPad is how far you can zoom out. I could see the whole floor and decide what my strategy would be on that floor. Right now I am trying to open up as many levels in the elevator as possible, so I am trying not to be distracted and slowed down by gathering ores and loot. I have learned that on lucky days, the exit ladders are often already uncovered, but sometimes at a distance from the access ladder.

It was tempting to run around and kill all the flying bugs for bug meat, but I knew that the ladder down was most likely to be near the access ladder. As it turned out, I was wrong, I was pretty far across the floor before finding the down ladder.
Here is a little video to give an idea about how mining takes place. I will should have clipped off that last bit, but I am not going to go back and do it now.

On this foray into the mine, I made it down two level 15. At that point I went back up to the top of the mine and unloaded my loot into the chest I have there. I spent the rest of the day working between the 11th and 15th floors, using up four of my field snacks.

You might have noticed that there are weeds in the mine, some are in the middle of the X in this image. When cut, by scythe or sword, they produce fiber and occasionally mixed seeds, the same as the ones outside the mine.
From time to time, you run across mine cars. These have several lumps of coal in them, which you can cause to fall out if you hit it with your pickax. Unlike the items scattered around on the floor, the coal in the carts doesn’t replenish between visits.
At the end of this mining day, I returned my sword to the storage box and was able to add one more cherry bomb. The two wild horseradishes were picked up on my way from the farm to the mine, the drop of sap, was dropped by a slime monster, though sometimes you can find sap in wooden barrels in the mine. The cave carrot did come out of a barrel. While cutting through the weeds I managed to get two mixed seeds and 22 bits of fiber. Though I killed far more than six slime monsters, I only got six slimes. The bug meat comes from not only the flying bugs, but from any grubs I find on the floor. I did pretty well with breaking rocks at 101 rocks gathered. The one piece of hard wood came from a crate. If I had only found one more copper ore, I would have had enough to forge 5 copper bars. Coal is needed to forge metal bars, so I was glad to see I gathered 14 lumps. I think I have already donated a topaz, and a quartz crystal to the museum’s collection. If so, I can sell these. The next item is an earth crystal, which I will soon need to start saving for crafting recipes. I got a piece of white algae as a monster drop from a green slime monster. The field snacks I brought in with me. I will have to wait to see if the three geodes yeld anything worth wile.
Back at the farm, I realized that my main storage chest was full. I ended moving the farmed and foraged plant items into the second box with some fish I am keeping.
The time spent in the mine today was well worth it. I leveled up in Combat. Now I will have to start saving up the ingredients I need to craft a sturdy ring. I will need a total of 25 pieces of bug meat, 25 slimes, and two copper bars.
I didn’t make much gilder from the miles, because I have to hold most things back for crafting projects.

One problem I have had with playing the game on iPad is that if I play for a long time, the game slows down and begins to glitch. When that happens it crashes, putting me back to getting out of bed on the last day I was playing. I have found that if I completely quit the game at the end of each day, and load the next day fresh, I don’t have the particular glitch. there are other glitches, I will cover in later posts.

My Inconvenient Live

I am a retired American Merchant Mariner.  l was living a nomadic lifestyle somewhere between being a nomad and an expat, before Covid19. I moved from country to country as my visas ran out. This blog covered my travels and the random thoughts about life, technology, travel, and the Oxford comma. Now I am stuck waiting for the pandemic to pass. During this time my posts will have very little to do with traveling, and more to do with keeping myself entertained during lockdown.
